Please join Kim Caise and Lorna Costantini on Wednesday, March 24th at 7pm EST for a ‘Twitter for Beginners‘ webinar. The session will be in Elluminate and anyone new to using Twitter is invited to join us. If you are already an avid Twitter user and tired of training your colleagues and friends suggest that they join our session on March 24th.

During the session, Kim and I will walk the participants through the basics of using Twitter. Participants will sign up for a Twitter account and the use of the Tweetdeck application will be featured to demonstrate different aspects of using Twitter. Participants may create a Twitter account and download Tweetdeck for use during and after the Elluminate session.

Tweetdeck is a fantastic application to manage Twitter feeds but it is not required to successfully use Twitter. Tweetdeck is an easy application for beginners and helps Twitter users become more adept at using Twitter on a larger scale and for this reason we will be using this application in our sessions.

If you are new to Elluminate, you may want to join the session a bit early to make sure that you do not have difficulty accessing the session. You can use your computer microphone to ask questions or use the chat window to participate in the discussion using text only. The ‘Twitter for Beginners’ session will be offered through the ‘Host Your Own Webinars‘ group at LearnCentral. You can register for the session at the LearnCentral event page or email us at info@elearncenter.ca. This session is free and open to the public. If you are unable to register or email us prior to the start of the session, please still join us.

The “Twitter for Beginners‘ webinar will be the first session of our new venture and offerings of our innovative ‘eLearning Center‘ training center. Each week, Kim and I get requests for us to create webinars on a variety of topics for beginners. Our sessions will be designed to offer support and resources to beginners just starting to use web 2.0 tools and technologies. All of our training sessions can be customized for groups of employees or faculty members.

If you are looking for a camera that is easy to use and does not require extensive video editing software or skills, I recommend using the Flip Video camera. I purchased the Flip Ultra to trial it’s use. Bought it at Walmart for under $200.00. Runs on AA batteries and has a built in USB connection. Really wanted to try the HD Mino but it is not available in Canada. This video by Computerworld gives a quick overview of how to use the camera. Still need to confirm that school USB ports will support the connection to the camera. If not, will have to purchase the USB connectors available as an accessory. The scripts on some of the blog posts are conflicting. Click the link to the blog post to see the videos.

Being a networked educator on the fringe of classroom, I share the frustration held by many teachers and students. Talking about technology, talking about the way of the future, talking about preparing our students for the 21st Century only to see the conversations go no where.

When I talk about podcasting and blogging I see the excitement in the eyes of students, I watch teachers sit up ready to learn, ready to forge ahead only to see momentum stall, stop completely because administrators say not now.

The classroom of the 21st Century supported or not is forming and forming at the speed of light. We absolutely must embrace web 2.0 tools, learn how to maximize their potential and run with them.

The personal learning network that I maintain via Twitter continues to provide me with access to numerous resources. I am a student – a life long learner – a baby boomer – who lives in the 21st Century classroom – ask – “what’s wrong with this picture?

Common Craft produces excellent easy to understand videos about web 2.0 tools. I came across this video about the Networked Student because Heidi Gable and Cindy Seibel shared it with me on Twitter.

For all those parents and teachers and Directors of Education sitting on the edge, I ask and challenge – what are we doing to prepare our students for this evolving classroom.

Everyday more and more teachers have exciting tools at their finger tips ready to make learning global and easy. Alex Couros demonstrates to folks around the world what is in store for students and classrooms of the 21st century. As if kids had all the fun. Alex did a test drive of a skype conference and Ustream broadcast. Twitting volunteers to join in. This is a screen cast of Alex streaming live (using Snapzpro and my Mac Book Pro). There is no audio as the volume was turned down to stop echo in the skype conference. Alex Couros used Ustream to broadcast and Camtwist (Mac) for the visual effects and desktop demonstrations, Audio Jack and Soundflower to put the production together.

Matt Montagne Grade 8 classroom teacher at University School of Milwaukee invited me to his virtual classroom to collaborate with Parents at his school. PBS was playing a program Growing up online and he asked his parents to view the program as it was being broadcasted live on TV. Matt organized an online meeting using Skype. Parents watched the telecast in their own homes and while watching the program chatted with Matt and I about their reactions to the program. To make it even more exciting, PBS was not broadcasting in my area so Matt set up his web camera in front of his own TV and broadcast the program via Ustream Kids don’t have a monopoly on online communications.

After you review the program which is now available online, I am sure that you will relate to these issues discussed by the parents.

The Internet cannot be blamed for the dysfunctional relationships between family members. In reference to the suicide death of Ryan Halligan described in the video.
Jacquie:

Bullying is not new. Seems the fact that it is all going on under the radar screen is a real problem.;

and

My son stays in touch with his best friend in Malaysia over the internet. Yet when his friend was in the US over xmas, he wouldn’t pick up a phone and call him. He said it is is difficult to talk on the phone because of awkward pauses, etc. He is more comfortable conducting the relationship on-line.

This program is a must see for all parents no matter the age.
Matt talks about his experience hosting the session.

While I was facilitating the project Student Learning a Parent Focus I found a particularly annoying problem with the video clips freezing and dropping the sound about a minute and a half into the clip. It took some considerable time Googling to find an answer. It happened when I created 5 minute video clips that I created with iMovie and then converted to Flash Movie using Adobe Flash encoder Movies. The problem was created by the audio component. These are the steps that I now take to produce a video using iMovie08. I import DV footage using the import function. Edit the movie as needed. Share the movie as a Quicktime Movie using the mp4 format being sure to select mono not stereo for the audio settings. Then open file in QuickTime Pro and convert the file to a flash movie. For some reason iMovie08 returns a error for saving video as a FLV which prevents you from exporting the file directly from iMovie08. I worked around it using Quicktime Pro. Import the Quicktime movie into Quicktime PRO and then export as a FLV. I learn by trial and error perhaps someone else has a better solution.
