Part One
Streaming a webcast using Ustream.tv

The following instructions ( adapted from this blog post by Alec Couros ) will guide you through the process of setting up your computer as well as streaming an audio production using Ustream or other streaming media site. Install Camtwist, Linein and Soundflower. and the Voice over the Interent Program (VOIP) Skype. All these programs are available for free on the Internet. The next step is to setup your preferences for your computer for each of the 4 applications.

After you install all the required applications, start setting up your Sound Preferences using system preferences.

Click the Apple icon to activate system preferences

Set your input device to Soundflower (2ch)

Set up your Skype Audio Preferences

Set the audio input and output as Soundflower(2ch) You can leave the ringing setup as the default setting.

Disable your web camera in the Skype Video setting

Disable (uncheck) the camera in your Skype preferences. The camera may be used for broadcasting in Ustream.

Set up Linein Settings

Set your input to Headset and output to Soundflower (2ch)

Take note of the Pass Thru setting

You will be activating this button to channel your audio through your headset and to the Broadcast. When it is unselected you will not be able to hear anything. It is a common mistake to forget to activate Linein by not selecting the Pass Thru button.

Set up Soundflower. Click the black flower on your menu bar to activate the drop down menu

Select your Audio device for Soundflower (2ch). In this case, it is the Logitech USB Headset.

Open the “Broadcast Now ” window.

If you have not set up an account with ustream, do so now. Type the name of your show into the "Create New Show" box and click "Create". Once the information is entered, click "Broadcast Now" to start broadcasting.

Allow access to your microphone and camera

A broadcast window will appear and request permission to detect your webcam or camera.

Select your audio and video settings

Video source is set as your web camera. In this case with the USB built in iSight the source is USB video, Audio Source is Soundflower 2(ch)

Select your web camera as the video device as your web camera driver and soundflower (2ch) for your audio device

Initiate a Skype call

Make sure that the Linein setting for Pass thru is activated

Start the Broadcast. Start the recording

Stop the Recording

When you click on stop the recording, you will be given the option to play delete or save your recording. To save your recording, click on save.

If you want to go beyond talking heads on Ustream, Camtwist allows you to change the virtual video device so that you can broadcast parts of your screen, or broadcast videos previously saved to your computer. This is a great tool that has a lot of potential for conferencing sessions. To play the audio of a movie, playing iTunes or recorded mp3 audio while streaming, use Camtwist and set the "General" preferences as Soundflower (2ch) For more information go to this tutorial.

Pasrt Two
Streaming your desktop using Ustream TV

This description is an addendum to the post about streaming with Ustream. The set up can be used for other streaming media services.

Set up Camtwist to broadcast your desktop.

To share the desktop and play a video with audio > in the General setting > select Soundflower (2ch)

1. In Camtwist, Select Desktop as the video source.

2. Deselect Full screen to set up a resizable capture area

3. Select Capture area

4. Position the window that you wish to capture and click Done.

Open the “Broadcast Now ” window

For desktop sharing or displaying a video recording set up the video source as Camtwist and the audio source as soundflower (2ch)

A section of the screen has been slected and ready to Broadcast. Start the Broadcast and Start recording.

To desktop share a movie and listen to the audio complete the following steps.

1. Select Movie

2. Load the movie

3. Locate the movie you wish to display on your hard drive.

The movie will start automatically and you many not be ready to broadcast. Stop the movie. Go to the beginning of the movie. Start the Broadcast then swich windows and start the movie.
